With the World Cup set to kick off on June 14, Goal rounds up some of the biggest and best clashes to take place in Russia – including Spain vs Portugal which sees the new and old guard of La Furia Roja battle it out against the European champions, and Luis Suarez facing off against Mohamed Salah when Uruguay and Egypt play each other.

Portugal vs Spain is easily one of the most exciting fixtures of the tournament. Portugal is a threat in this competition as they are helmed by a confident Cristiano Ronaldo fresh from winning the Champions League as well as leading his side to a European Championship victory two years ago.

The current Spanish team features a mixed assortment of promising young talent including Marco Asensio, David de Gea and Isco as well as Andres Iniesta, David Silva and Gerard Pique.

After a slow start, the World Cup ramps up the excitement very quickly with two of Europe’s most successful sides in recent years going head-to-head to kick things off in Group B.

Portugal enters the tournament as European Champions after their victory over hosts France at Euro 2016, with five-time Ballon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo set to captain his side in what could be his last World Cup tournament appearance.

Fernando Santos’ side has been rejuvenated following their continental success, with Manchester City’s Bernardo Silva and AC Milan’s Andre Silva just two of several new faces set to galvanize the Portuguese attack.

They’re not so bad in defense either, with only Spain and England conceding fewer goals in European qualifying.

And with the Spaniards suffering defeats in their opening World Cup matches for two tournaments running, Ronaldo and co will be hoping to capitalize on opening day nerves.

Spain though looks to be back to their best. After Euro and World Cup successes in 2008, 2010 and 2012 disappointments have followed in Brazil and France in 2014 and 2016, but Julen Lopetegui’s side is primed for a much better run this time around.

With familiar faces in midfield including Andres Iniesta, David Silva, and Sergio Busquets, you can expect La Roja’s desire to dominate the ball to continue, but the now more mature additions of Isco – who played a central role in qualifying –  Marco Asensio, Saul, and Lucas Vazquez will add new vitality, as Spain seek World Cup success once more.

With Ramos set to face-off with teammate Ronaldo, and a battle of the Silvas for possession in midfield, this fixture has all the ingredients for a much-needed tournament kick-starter.

Cristiano Ronaldo is still one of the best players in the world, and as he goes, so goes Portugal. Portugal has also achieved their greatest heights on the national stage. They won the Euro championship two years ago, and are looking for a rebound after being eliminated in the group stage at the World Cup in 2014 by the United States. He will no doubt provide many a notable moment in Russia.

Sergio Ramos captains both Real Madrid and Spain, and seems like he has been around forever, which, well, he has since debuted with the full Spanish national team before his 20th birthday. (He has over 150 appearances with Spain and counting). He enters the tournament somewhat controversially, having been involved in the play that injured Mo Salah of Liverpool (Egypt) in the Champions League final.

Ramos is one of the best defenders in the world and has been named to the UEFA Team of the Year seven different times.

Is he still the force that he was? No, but Andres Iniesta, who played his last game at Barcelona this month, will have one last swan song with the Spanish national team before moving professionally to Japan. He’s been one of the key figures in both Spain and Barcelona’s run of dominance earlier this decade, and can still be a central figure for a talented Spanish squad transitioning to the next generation on the world stage.
